I have a habit of destroying cell phones, leaving my “old” cell phones unusable. I’m thinking of upgrading my current phone before that happens, though, and found a website that’s willing to pay me cash for my old phone.

I currently have a Sony Ericson Z525A Camera phone - I put the make and model into the form online, and found that they’ll pay me $4.00 for my phone. Not a ton of money, but not bad for something that would otherwise collect dust. If I were selling an iPhone, they’d pay me around $300.

After entering your phone make/model, you enter your mailing information, and they ship you a box with prepaid postage on it. You mail in your phone, and get your $4 check in the mail. They then (apparently) sell the phones in developing countries, where there’s apparently a market for used cell phones.

You also have the option of donating the value of your phone to the 911 Cell Phone Bank, to benefit senior citizens and victims of abuse.

Aside from making $4-$300.00, there are environmental reasons to “recycle” them. Chemicals contained on the circuit board of the cell phones can be released into the air and groundwater if burned or disposed off in landfills — most cities consider cell phones to be hazardous waste and don’t allow them in the trash.
